GE Power Conversion has been selected by Austrian mechanical supplier BUMA engineering & Anlagenbau GmbH (BUMA) to install electrical equipment for a new descaling spray in thyssenkrupp Steel Europe’s WBW2 hot rolling mill in Duisburg, Germany.
Efficient scale removal during hot rolling of steel is essential for high material quality. During hydromechanical descaling, the scale layer, formed during the hot rolling process, is removed with a high pressure water jet. The intensity (impact) of this process is an important indicator of descaling performance, ensuring that the required surface quality is achieved using as little water as possible to keep the temperature loss as low as possible.
BUMA is developing and installing a new descaling plant for thyssenkrupp Steel Europe, which will replace the existing ZW2 descaler directly upstream of the 7-cage finishing plant. With the new installation, descaling can be carried out with 3 times higher water pressure.
BUMA chose GE Power Conversion as their partner for the electrical equipment, due to our long term business relationship and our experiences with the installed base of end customers (thyssenkrupp Steel Europe). The contract for GE Power Conversion has a volume of approximately US $ 3.6 million.
The project will be carried out in four stages:
Electrical installation, from February 2022
Delivery and installation of pumping station equipment, May 2022
Functional test of pumping station equipment, June / July 2022
Final installation and commissioning of the ZW2 descaler, August 2022
During hot rolling, incoming raw strip past the finishing mill is automatically detected and automation failures leading to errors and downtime are a risk. A production stop entails considerable costs due to the loss of material and time. This can lead to downgrading of the material – and in the worst case – to its removal from the factory. The installation of the new descaling system by BUMA and GE Power Conversion will help to significantly mitigate these risks, as the new system will significantly improve the surface quality of the belt and the stability of the plant process.
